Sebastian Kite (b. 1986, British-German) is a highly regarded installation artist based in London and southwest France. His artistic practice revolves around the exploration of the intersection between art, architecture, and music, with a particular focus on site-specific installations that challenge traditional perceptions of space.
To date, Kite’s artistic practice spans various disciplines including installation, sculpture, and public art. His immersive environments are characterised by their architectural scale, immersing the audience in a multidimensional experience that blurs the boundaries between the tangible and intangible. By placing the viewer at the center of the artwork, Kite disrupts our relationship with the spaces we inhabit, prompting a conscious engagement and questioning of our perception of time.
With a holistic creative approach, Kite employs light, sound, moving-image, technology, sculpture and performance to illustrate his vision. Currently, Kite’s practice engages with the complex interplay between memory and experience. Through immersive installations, he strives to create transformative experiences that invite viewers to reflect on their own personal narratives and the broader collective consciousness.
Collaboration is a key aspect of Kite’s creative process, often working closely with choreographers, composers, and filmmakers to bring his vision to life. This collaborative approach enriches his practice, creating dynamic and multisensory experiences for the audience. Kite’s work has been exhibited internationally at renowned venues such as Import Projects in Berlin, Saatchi Gallery and South Kiosk in London, Wanås Konst in Sweden, Arsenale in Venice, and Phoenix in Arizona, among others. He has also ventured into unconventional locations, showcasing his work in prisons, bunkers, railway stations, and industrial sites.
With a background in architecture, having studied at The Glasgow School of Art and Westminster School of Architecture, Kite’s artistic vision is deeply rooted in a strong understanding of spatial design. His expertise in architecture informs his approach to creating transformative installations that reshape the perception of physical environments.
Kite’s professional journey includes co-founding the installation agency Kite & Laslett from 2010 to 2013 and working as the Head of Design at Jotta Studio, a design agency, from 2014 to 2017. He has also shared his knowledge and passion for the arts by teaching at esteemed institutions such as The Bartlett UCL and Westminster School of Architecture. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Kite was honored with the Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Award in 2015.
In 2019, Kite established Studio SK, a creative platform aimed at translating his artistic output into cultural and commercial realms. This venture allows him to further explore the boundaries between art and design, merging his innovative artistic vision with practical applications.
Sebastian Kite’s work continues to captivate audiences and provoke meaningful dialogues about the relationship between art, architecture, and human perception. With his visionary installations and collaborative approach, he is at the forefront of the contemporary art scene, pushing the boundaries of spatial experiences and enriching our understanding of the built environment.
